When we moved to Portugal, one of the first things I dreamed of creating was a home that felt warm, textured, and connected to the natural light around us. Paint plays such a big part in that feeling — it can completely shift the atmosphere of a space. For our living room, I chose to work with Bauwerk Colour, a brand whose limewash paints I’ve admired for their soft, earthy tones and natural texture. We used the shade Bone — a calm, neutral hue that brings the perfect balance between warmth and light.Below, I’m sharing the simple steps I followed to bring these walls to life.

Step 1 – Surface Prep Our walls were already primed, so I applied one layer of Bauwerk Prep Coat to make sure the surface was ready for the limewash. It’s an important step — it helps the paint absorb evenly and prevents patchiness later on.Step 2 – Mix Your Paint Before painting, I prepared the limewash using a machine stirrer to ensure the pigment was perfectly mixed. Tip: keep stirring gently while painting — limewash is a living material, and the pigments settle if left too long.

Step 3 – First Layer Time for the first coat. I dipped my brush only about a quarter deep and started painting in loose, flower-shaped movements. The secret is not to overthink it — the beauty of limewash lies in its soft, natural imperfection.Step 4 – Second Layer Once the first coat had fully dried, I repeated the same motion for the second layer. This step deepens the tone and builds that beautiful, cloudy texture that limewash is known for.

A Few Thoughts If you’ve ever thought about trying limewash, I can only say: go for it. It’s simple, meditative, and incredibly rewarding. The result transforms not only a space, but also how it feels to be in it. For this project, I used Bauwerk Limewash in the colour Bone, and I couldn’t be happier with the result — it’s soft, timeless, and feels perfectly at home here.
